Hastings Macmillan Cancer Support Champions Project

HVA are delighted to be collaborating with Macmillan Cancer Support to help people with cancer access help and services across the borough.  It is one of eleven Cancer Champions projects across the UK, funded by Macmillan, and based in local communities.

We aim to understand what prevents people accessing services and enable everyone to be pro-active in identifying potential symptoms, attend screenings and be aware of support available locally.

This project builds on HVA’s existing projects, including Mr Hastings & St Leonards, Making it Happen and work to address health inequalities. We are working with existing skills, knowledge, enthusiasm and capacity in communities to reach people less likely to access support.

We are recruiting volunteers, drawn from a variety of backgrounds, willing to talk to people in their communities about cancer and the support available. Training will be given to those who sign up, in conversational techniques, mental health awareness, and the different types of cancer and treatments.

We are also working closely with the Hastings and Rother Cancer Support Network, which brings together organisations and teams that support people living with and affected by cancer. It aims to improve joint working, integration and shared learning to improve pathways to care, and support activities in areas of high need.

The project runs from September 2024 to September 2027, funded by Macmillan, and hosted by HVA.
